Surface characterisation of synthetic coal chars made from model compounds

چکیده
Knowledge of surface properties is essential for understanding the reaction mechanisms involved in several coal conversion processes. However, due to the complexity and heterogeneity of coal this is rather difficult and the use of known model compounds could be a valuable tool. Single model compounds have been widely used, but they give a quite simplified picture. In this work a mixture of model compounds in a phenol-formaldehyde matrix was cured in order to create cross-linked structures. The obtained synthetic coal was pyrolysed in a fixed bed reactor, under helium atmosphere. The surface composition of the chars was evaluated by XPS, adsorption gravimetry of water vapour, temperatureprogrammed desorption and potentiometric titration. Texture was characterised by N2 and CO2 adsorption isotherms at 77 K and 273 K, respectively, and immersion calorimetry in benzene. The results obtained from the different techniques were contrasted in order to give an overview of the surface properties (chemical and physical) of the samples studied. Chars obtained under the same operating conditions from a high volatile bituminous coal were used as a reference.

The effect of the textural properties of bituminous coal chars on NO emissions
NO is the primary product of the oxidation of char nitrogen, and in some combustion processes the NO can be reduced on the char surface to give N2O and/or N2. In this study a range of bituminous coals (low, medium and high volatile matter content) were pyrolysed in a fixed bed reactor at various heating rates. Textural characterisation was carried out by measuring true (He) and apparent (Hg) de...
متن کاملKinetic models for the oxy-fuel combustion of coal and coal/biomass blend chars obtained in N2 and CO2 atmospheres
The thermal reactivity and kinetics of five coal chars, a biomass char, and two coal/biomass char blends in an oxy-fuel combustion atmosphere (30%O2-70%CO2) were studied using the non-isothermal thermogravimetric method at three heating rates. Fuel chars were obtained by devolatilization in an entrained flow reactor at 1273 K under N2 and CO2 atmospheres.Three nth-order representative gas-solid...
متن کاملChars from gasification of coal and pine activated with K2CO3: acetaminophen and caffeine adsorption from aqueous solutions.
The high carbon contents and low toxicity levels of chars from coal and pine gasification provide an incentive to consider their use as precursors of porous carbons obtained by chemical activation with K2CO3. Given the chars characteristics, previous demineralization and thermal treatments were made, but no improvement on the solids properties was observed. The highest porosity development was ...

The characteristics of the porous structure of carbonized materials affect their physical properties, such as density or strength, their sorption capacity, and their reactivity in thermochemical processing, determining both their applicability as fuels or sorbents and their efficiency in various processes. The porous structure of chars is shaped by the combined effects of physical and chemical ...
متن کاملOxy - fuel combustion kinetics and morphology of coal chars obtained in N 2 and CO 2 atmospheres in an entrained flow reactor
The thermal reactivity and kinetics of four coal chars (HVN, UM, SAB and BA) in an oxy-fuel combustion atmosphere (30%O2-70%CO2) were studied using a thermobalance. The coal chars were obtained by devolatilization in an entrained flow reactor (EFR) at 1000 oC for 2.5 s under 100% N2 and CO2 atmospheres. The reactivity tests were carried out by isothermal thermogravimetric analysis at different ...
